i've recently bought a new bag with moominpappa drawn on it reading agatha christie and drinking wine, and so i got curious as to how many people here have read or know about moomins and tove jansson in general? I think that it's such a lovely little series and I absolutely adore it! I agree wholeheartedly that when tove jansson said that she "tried to go for something soft and warm" that she achieved it in her children books. and to think that she began writing that during world war 2?
so, have you ever watched moomins the adaptation or have you ever read it? I found the "Moomins and the Great Flood" online and decided to read it because even though I'm aware of the books/tv series and love them, i've never actually sat down and read/watched them.

I love Moomins! I've seen the entire anime and I can definitely say it's one of my favs. I don't usually tend to gravitate towards wholesome stuff but like with Ghbili movies and SU, what gravitates me towards it is its emotional honesty and maturity. There are also a lot of episodes/stories that are clearly parables about environmentalism, capitalism, and the corruption of the police, so that adds a whole other layer of adult appeal imo.
My sister loves Moomins even more than I do. I actually got her a Moomintroll plush and a Moomin teacup last Christmas. This year, I've promised to get her a Snufkin plush~

i love the moomins! i had the picture book "who will comfort toffle" as a kid, and i remember reading collections of the comics. i tried watching the newer show when it came out, but i couldn't get into it. the 1990s version looks very sweet though, i might give it a try at some point also, fun fact, tove jansson was sapphic! she lived with her partner tuulikki. tuulikki inspired the character "too-ticky." i've also read that thingumy & bob (the little guys with the suitcase) were a metaphor for another sapphic relationship tove had. thingumy is a great fuckin name either way

I was so surprised!
Didn't Tove jansson also base snufkin on her first relationship with that guy? what was his name? hold up. Atos Wirtanen, according to wiki. He used to travel a lot and I think was also MP or maybe PM of Finland. And because he could be for many days not at home, Tove decided that it wasn't going to work and then later based Snufkin (the character famously known to love to travel) on him.
and yeah, thingumy is such a great name. i didn't even think about those two being sapphic. badly translating my native's language proverb: live for a century, learn for a century
