NaNoWriMo is coming up soon, with lots of folks already prepping for it!
For those uninitiated: NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel-Writing Month. Traditionally, it's doing just that: writing a novel. Specifically, a 50,000-word manuscript, start to finish, during the month of November!
Those are the rules that are lied out on the official site, at least. But the community that has formed around the month is way more lax.
Is 50k too much for you? Don't write that much. Lower the word count. Or make something else signify the goal. Or don't even give yourself a goal! Not interested in writing a novel? Hell yeah, dude, we got you. Write some short stories you've been meaning to get to. Write some fanfiction, or essays! On AO3 alone, there's over 2k fanfics with a tag indicating that the piece was written for NaNoWriMo. I've also seen plenty of zines made for it!
Basically, the community ideology behind NaNoWriMo is all about focusing in on your writing for a month, pushing yourself (but not overworking yourself!), and connecting with other writers. It's a huge motivation booster to be working on the same thing at the same time, and there are forums, Discord servers and in-person events all revolving around NaNoWriMo. Plus, the amount of people knowing that we'll all be doing the same thing at the same time means that there's sure to be lots of folks offering advice, help, and beta reading.
So! With all of that preamble out of the way, I wanted to ask if anyone here would be participating in NaNoWriMo? What are your goals? Do you have any ideas?
Me, personally, I'm gonna buckle down and try and fulfill as many prompts from my ongoing document of writing ideas as possible. These ideas ranges from essays, to a possible con panel script, to fanfic ideas! And then, if I manage to get all that done (which I'm not holding my breath for), I'll work on my ongoing project as much as I can. I have no word count goal, because those stress me and usually hinder my writing, but I do want to at least get the total word count for the month, once it's over! How about y'all?
