i've always, always struggled with this and googling it doesn't really help either, since most websites will tell me what i already know, so i decided to ask you guys here:
whenever you write something (anything!) and decide to share it online, where do you do that? which sites do you prefer to share your works on? and also, are we talking about fanfic or original fiction (because i primarily write original works)? have any tips on sharing things online? (not for the fame or money, obviously, but i think i can say it for everyone that we do like it when our works get noticed, don't we?)
thanks in advance! :>

P.S. actually, thinking a bit more about it, maybe we should create a dedicated writing's club here? i mean, we do post our writing here in threads, but maybe we can make a group, start sharing more of our writing? if anyone is up to the idea.
i think the writer's club can comfortably stay in the bounds of this forum, instead of creating a discord server or anything. especially considering how quite a lot of us came here because we are tired of using social medias and messaging apps.
sharing in a close-knitted group and community is more comfy and easier to start rather than, say, publishing on wattpad where there are literally millions of stories which will probably get buried and left unread. and publishing on tumblr, to me at least, feels a bit weird.

As for the original question: I'm sure you already know about AO3 (which does allow for publishing original works), so I won't get into that. I will say that you can publish your writing on itch.io. Although that is primarily a gaming site, there is also a zine and comics scene there.

Oooh a writing club sounds like so much fun!! Although I'll admit I've never really been a part of one, what sort of stuff would you imagine this writing club would do? I mainly write fan fiction (any original works I do tends to be comics or VNs/Zines, since I enjoy the combo of using visual and ambiguousness more, which I publish on my website or itch.io respectively, but I digress) which I mainly publish to AO3 (obvious) and Dreamwidth! Although for Dreamwidth it's usually for a community I'm doing a writing challenge in, but I know there's a lot of people who make a community or journal on DW just to publish their own writing! There's also people that publish original works there as well. -- A potential down side to DW is that I suspect it's a bit harder to gain a large following for original works if your not publishing it in other places, since the site itself is a bit more sleepy than other places. I also publish my works to my website as a form of backup! It's a pretty simple set up, although I managed to get some light character/relationship sorting on the pages dedicated to a single fandom. There's a webring I know for it called simply "The Fanfiction Webring." I'm sure there's probably either a webring for original works out there, or at least the potential for one I don't have experience with this, but if you're interested in going Pro or Pro-adjacent there's always writing magazines!

A writing club sounds lovely! Especially if it'd be with all of you guys. I think getting to share my writing with a trusted group of friends would help motivate me more, since I often feel downhearted about my writing getting little attention. To be fair, I've been focusing on screenwriting for years now and it seems to be really hard to get any attention if you don't commit to writing something full-length, so....yeah.
I didn't know Dreamwidth was a thing though! Or that itch.io published writing! These all sound like good opportunities for me.

To be fair, I've been focusing on screenwriting for years now and it seems to be really hard to get any attention if you don't commit to writing something full-length, so....yeah. Replying to every1 at once: tbf, i've never been to a writer's club before too (apart from servers I've joined for writing challenges), so I don't know the inner workings of these groups. But from what I've heard from my russian literature teacher, in the past writers/poets would usually gather together around at some place and read their works to each other. I suppose they would provide feedback then and just chat afterwards? Idk, I mostly remember writers being persecuted by the Tsar from my literature classes. so considering all of this, i suppose creating a writer's club would just be us and whoever else joins sharing our works and giving feedback/critique. I don't mind doing it here, but it might spam the forum a bit with threads. So there are a few options: Option A: Creating one mega thread and we just send our works there and give feedback, though it might be messy, obviously Option B: Creating separate threads for each of our works, but again, it might be a bit too spamy, depending on how often we all write Option C: Creating a discord serve? I know most of us are against using discord, so I don't think this choice will be that popular, but I'll put it here anyway Option D: Maybe Tumblr? I assume we all have tumblr account and we perhaps might be able to contact each other through there. although again, tumblr is not really something where you can do stuff privately, though i've seen that you can create private sideblogs? I've also had an idea of making a little online magazine website (maybe even on neocities) where any1 will be able to submit and publish their stuff. because I've always struggled with "professionally" publishing my works into online magazines, since they often have complicated process or fees or i'm just unsure where to publish. so we can also do this
I don't mind any of the options, whatever works for you guys. in addition, i think it'd be cool if we make monthly or semi-regular events in our writer's club. again, as a way to motivate each other. jelly has been doing december prompt month stuff. the main question is just where exactly we are going on making a writer's club.
TL;DR: where and how are we going to organise a writer's club?

I don't mind doing it here, but it might spam the forum a bit with threads. So there are a few options: Oooh the feedback/Critique sounds neat! I also think just bouncing ideas off of people and using prompts can be really useful The online magazine website sounds like a bunch of fun too! I wouldn't mind doing the typesetting and or HTML set up for something like that, if you need any help! :3 As for the options on where to host it... on here, I agree that it might be a bit spammy if we all use different threads and messy if we just use one... I know that people can set it to only receive notifications for new threads, but the new post option seems like it's all or nothing, for me -- although like you said this really depends on how much use this club gets in the first place. For the messy-ness, I suppose we could always ask a mod to create a new section or subsection for a writing club? Discord server... I could see the usefulness, but I'm not sure if the infrastructure build for fast pace types of conversations would work well for this sort of thing. Although I'm not outright apposed to it or anything. I actually don't have a Tumblr. I used to have one back in the early 2010s, but I stoped using it around 2016 since I was wasting too much time on it XD I'm not sure about making a new one for myself, the art blogs I check up on from time to time seem to have some trouble with the layout changing and algorithms being implemented on there...? For other options, I suppose the writing club could be hosted on it's own forum (Gah, it feels sort of like heresy to type this on here DX) hosted on proboards or jcink or something like that and just affiliate or... something back to the sparkle pack boards? *Shrug* The only other idea I have is making a dreamwidth community with anon comments turned on or something, since it has an RSS feed built in, but I'm just soft on DW stuff because of how nested comments work on there and it's already where I spent a good chunk of my online time anyways. XD This is just my two cents on this, so don't take it too seriously

Personally, I vote on just having a writing thread right here (although a writing showcase on Neocities could be really cool for finished works). I'm not totally against having a separate forum for writing, but I feel like it's a little redundant considering how we've built up our community from this place. Plus, it might unintentionally lock out future Sparklepack members who'll be unaware that the writing club even exists.
True, having a singular thread might be messy, but what if we all agreed to share our writing on a specific day? Like every Friday, and then we could spend the rest of the week replying to each other and making suggestions.

If everyone is in agreement, also, I would be very glad to create a sub-board (..maybe with a sticky thread in it, just to inform people what it's about, and maybe specific dates for sharing? I dunno; it's in your hands! If you need a thread pinned on there, just hmu.) in the Literature board specifically for the writing club! It's really no trouble at all.

I've already created a thread, haha :>
Is a sub-board another board inside a board? I think that'd be pretty useful and I can move my thread to there. I vote for a sub-board or just another board, whatever works for you!
Also, while I'm posting a new post here, we can also do a reading club while we're at it? I mean, it might be too much for one group, reading club AND writing club? But you can't be a good writer without first being a good reader. Whatever everyone votes, I wouldn't mind running/creating a reading club here, I think reading communally gives more motivation to continue reading.
Anyway, thanks Franziska von Karma (/lh) for the admin help!
Also, also (gosh, the ADHD), I've noticed that there's an RSS feed on this server and I wanted to make a widget with latest posts so that people would be able to add it onto their websites, but it seems that the server on rss feed is set at noindex, nofollow (basically telling the internet: No bots allowed) which prevents me from doing an algorithm for scanning it. I personally don't mind not creating any widget, but if there's a way to remove the meta tags from that specific page, then I can make a little pop-up window for everyone's site that will say things like, "[user] posted in [thread]!" and stuff and stuff

Printing that out and stapling it to my forehead, thank you. (HAHAHAHA) I believe a writing club could be a very clever idea; I know a lot of friends of mine also consider communal reading to help them get through works easier than by themselves.

An RSS widget sounds like a fun idea; but after scouring every single Admin page on ProBoards, it seems like there's no way to directly edit the way the feed is built (or.. really, most things in the code of the forum itself? not without creating a plugin, at the very least. this is a small ick i have with ProBoards, but i guess i'll have to swallow that pill until i have stable enough income to pay for hosting elsewhere <_>); it seems like it only works (allegedly, from ProBoards Help Board moderators) with standard readers..? Though there is a chance that I have completely glossed over something, in which case someone smarter than me is free to object to my statement and whack me with a rubber mallet over the head,
The sub-board exists now, also!
