“I dare you to…” he starts, his eyes drifting to a far away place as he thinks. All too quickly his face shifts into a haughty smirk, gaze sliding down and meeting mine. He leans forward from his position on the old floral couch, towards me, putting his elbows on his knees. I shift my position too, trying to meet him head on, hide the anxiety building up in my stomach. I was cross-legged on the floor in front of the couch, now I’ve brought one knee up higher than the other to lean my weight on. His breath fogs up my glasses.
The TV still plays some game show from behind me, where it was turned down but not turned off at the start of our game. When he didn’t speak right away, the murmurs of the television host slipped between us, saving the moment from silence. As my heart began to join my stomach in its flips and turns I raised my eyebrows, trying for an impatient look. It must have worked because he finally finished his dare, “kiss me.”
The voice of the host fills the space again as my mind scrambles to think of some sort of response. I couldn’t kiss him! I wouldn’t. I… shouldn’t. I couldn’t just lose though. Everything I’d done to be here right now couldn’t be thrown out over a stupid dare.
Something in my face must have changed because he seemed to recognize I'd resolved myself to do it. A slightly surprised, approving look came about him as he coyly leaned back into his original position, one arm spread out over the back of the couch. He was forcing me to make the move, obviously intending to infuse as much embarrassment into this situation as possible.
I forced myself to take a second to breathe, using the moment to take off my glasses and wipe them with my T-shirt. He cocked an eyebrow at my apparent stalling. Slipping my glasses back on as I stood up, my heart slowly lowered to a more normal rhythm. This was fine. He started it. It didn’t mean anything. He was just trying to win the game, he didn’t think I would do it, that's all. I was determined now to just get this over with, then it would be my turn to come up with a completely humiliating dare for him.
squaring myself in front of him I place one hand on the back of the couch beside his head for support as lean forward. Closer now, I could see something wavering in his confident expression, he really wasn’t expecting me to actually do it was he? My knees pressed into the edge of the seat cushion as I closed the gap between us, one of his legs ending up between mine. I didn’t know what to do with my other hand. Its corresponding side of the couch was blocked by the arm he had slung over it. So it just hovered between us, ready to catch myself if my one arm wasn’t enough support.
I hesitated just in front of his face long enough to see an almost panic cross behind his eyes, then I was kissing him. It was short and passionless but still seemed longer than it ever should have been. He tasted like the soda and chips we had shared when we were still invested in the TV. When I pulled back he followed me, leaning forward again as I sat back on the floor. I started wiping my glasses again as an excuse not to look at him. “I -” he tries to say, but I cut him off before he can even start, “My turn!” He blinks vacantly like he can’t comprehend what I just said, before intelligence suddenly returns to him and he nods his head, “yeah, your turn.”
