I haven't written fanfiction since I was a teenager, but my latest replay of Final Fantasy VI (specifically, the Pixel Remaster verison) -- a game from my childhood that I deeply love -- inspired me to give it another try. It's a story about a former Imperial soldier who becomes a deserter when General Leo dies and strikes out on his own, then when the end of the world hits, he becomes a mercenary and ends up in a small farming village in the mountains that can mysteriously still grow food. The only member of the main cast I plan on bringing in is Locke, and that's because the village is in the same mountain range as the Phoenix Cave. I have some ideas for where to take the story, but mostly it's going to be about the former soldier's personal and interpersonal struggles to survive and retain his moral code in a harsh and hostile world -- very small-scale stuff.
It's actually kind of refreshing to write something that is allowed to be completely self-indulgent and not sanitized for sale to a wide audience. It's for the extremely narrow slice of population who 1) reads fanfiction, and 2) reads FF6 fanfiction, and that's it. I just put in all the things I think are cool, I interpret stuff from the game however I want, and take in whichever direction I think is most fun. It's writing for fun, pure and simple.

Yaaaas! I used to write a lot of BBC Merlin fanfiction for that reason. It is nice when there is a small audience.
Enjoy, and if you feel like sharing, pls do!

This right here is why I love fanfiction, both writing and reading.
Like, all fanfiction carries with it this soft air of an unprofessional hobby. The author lays themselves bare and it can just be an absolute unfiltered snapshot of themselves, brought to life through characters and a story all their own.
And there's some so magical about that, forming a genuine connection with others through their self-indulgent pet-projects. I'll certainly always find it more engaging than something put through an editing ringer for mass-appeal. = w =

really makes me want to get back into writing fanfic. i used to do nothing BUT write fanfic… the best part was writing for semi rare pairs or “dead” fandoms because i had the same usernames coming back to my fics all the time that i built a rapport with and i felt like i didn’t really have to write for anyone else since hardly anyone was gonna read it. hope u have tons of fun writing ur ff6 fanfic !!!
